The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal will deliver judgment on Wednesday, September 6, in the case of Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Peter Obi and LP and President Tinubu.

Outcome of the Election

Recall that on February 25, 2023. Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos state and the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), defeated his main rivals Peter Obi of Labour Party (LP), and Atiku Abubakar of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to the official results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Tinubu received 8,794,726 votes, representing 36.61 percent of the total valid votes cast, while Abubakar got 6,984,520 votes, or 29.07 percent. The third-placed candidate was Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra state and the flagbearer of the Labour Party (LP), who garnered 6,101,533 votes, or 25.40 percent. Also, the fourth position went to Rabiu Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano state and the nominee of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), who got 1,496,687 votes, or 6.40 percent.

However, some of the issues that plagued the electoral process included delays in the arrival of electoral materials and personnel, malfunctioning of card readers, vote buying, voter intimidation, attacks on polling units and collation centres, and failure to upload polling unit results to the INEC result viewing portal.

Therefore, several civil society groups and observers expressed doubts about the credibility and transparency of the election and called for an independent audit.

Both Abubakar and Obi rejected the outcome of the election and vowed to challenge it in court. They alleged that the election was rigged in favour of Tinubu and that INEC was compromised by the APC-led government.
