A 24-year-old University of Port Harcourt student has been detained by Edo police after reportedly killing his girlfriend with a knife.
On Tuesday in Benin, Muhammed Dankwara, the commissioner of police in Edo, informed reporters that the suspect’s landlord had reported the incident to the police.
He claimed that the landlord informed the authorities that the student had used a knife to repeatedly stab the woman in the neck and the chest.
“Police operatives immediately swung into action, arrested the suspect, recovered two knives, and rushed the victim to the hospital where her body was deposited in a morgue.
“Items recovered from the suspect were two blood-stained knives, two iPhones, one Nokia phone, one laptop, and two ATM cards.
“The case was transferred to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Benin. The suspect will be arraigned for murder soon,’’ Mr Dankwara said.
The suspect told newsmen that he discovered some fetish items in the deceased’s possession after she traveled from Asaba to spend time with him in Benin.
He said that after an argument, the female stabbed him, to which he retaliated in kind.
