NEMA Warns of Flooding Risk in 19 States and 56 Communities in August

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a warning that 19 states and 56 communities across Nigeria may experience heavy rainfall that can lead to flooding within the month of August.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a warning that 19 states and 56 communities across Nigeria may experience heavy rainfall that can lead to flooding within the month of August.

According to a statement released by the Lagos Territorial Coordinator of NEMA, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, on Monday, August 14, the states and communities that are likely to be affected by the flooding are:

  • Delta: Aboh
  • Ekiti: Ado Ekiti
  • Ondo: Akure, Idanre, Ifon, Iju Itaogbolu, Ogbese, Owo, Owena, Ondo
  • Lagos: Apapa, Badagry, Eti Osa, Ikeja, Ikorodu, Ikoyi, Lagos Island, Ojo, Surulere
  • Anambra: Atani
  • Ogun: Ifo, Ota, Sagamu
  • Nasarawa: Lafia, Wamba
  • Cross River: Ikom, Ogoja
  • Bauchi: Jamaare, Misau, Azare, Itas ,Kafin Madaki,Kari, Kirfi, Tafawa Balewa, Katagum
  • Jigawa: Hadejia, Miga
  • Osun: Ilesa, Oshogbo
  • Kwara: Kosubosu
  • Zamfara: Anka, Bungudu, Gusau
  • Sokoto: Goronyo
  • Adamawa: Numan, Shelleng
  • Taraba: Serti
  • Benue: Ito, Katsina-Ala, Vande-Ikya
  • Imo: Oguta, Orlu
  • Abia: Ugba

Farinloye urged the residents of these areas to brace up for possible flooding and take necessary precautions to avoid loss of lives and properties. He also advised them to clear their drainages and avoid dumping refuse in waterways.

He said NEMA was collaborating with other relevant agencies and stakeholders to monitor the situation and provide timely response in case of any emergency.

Farinloye added that NEMA had also prepositioned relief materials in strategic locations across the country to cater for the needs of the affected people.

He appealed to the public to report any sign of flooding to the nearest NEMA office or call the toll-free emergency number 112 for prompt intervention
