Abuja Court Convicts Internet Fraudster for $270 Scam
An Abuja High Court has sentenced an internet fraudster, Abass Aminu Abdulkareem, to community service for defrauding an American citizen of $270. Abdulkareem, who is also known as “Yahoo Boy”, pleaded guilty to the charge of cheating by impersonation.
According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulkareem created a fake Facebook profile page with the name Jeremiah Lincoln, and claimed to be a US citizen. He then contacted Amanda, who is a cousin of the real Jeremiah Lincoln, and obtained $270 from her under false pretenses.
The EFCC arraigned Abdulkareem on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, before Justice O.I. Adelaja of the FCT High Court sitting in Kubwa. The judge convicted and sentenced him to community service to be supervised by the Nigerian Correctional Service’s officers. The court also ordered him to forfeit his iPhones 12 Pro and XR to the Federal Government.
The EFCC said that the conviction was part of its efforts to curb internet fraud and cybercrime in Nigeria.
