On Friday, some former Boko Haram fighters protested in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, claiming that the government had abandoned them.

The protest wa caused on by a breakdown in communication between the government and the former Boko Haram members participating in a deradicalization and rehabilitation program at the Hajj Camp in Maiduguri.

The ex-Boko Haram members requested their N30,000 guaranteed allowance, claiming that they had been ignored by the government.
Prior to the arrival of security personnel to diffuse the situation, the protest created chaos and anxiety along the Bulumkutu-Maiduguri Highway.

The governor of Borno State declared that following the event, the collection of the repentant insurgents’ biometric data had resumed, assuring the public that the situation was under control.

The demonstration served as an example of the delicate process that the authorities must undertake in reintegrating former fighters into communities that have frequently endured years of violence.
