Protest in South-east as economist condemns subsidy
Workers in Imo State protested yesterday in Owerri, the state capital, against what they called the federal government’s “anti-people policies” and demanded the revival of the economy. The strike was launched by organizations consisting of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).
They arrived in the entrance of the Government House in Owerri after the demonstration, where the police and other security personnel protected them to ensure it was peaceful.
State-based Civil Society Organisations (CSO) were also present among the demonstrators.
They carried signs that said, “We Say No to Federal Government’s Anti-Poor People Policies,” “Fix Our Refineries,” “Immediate Implementation of Salary Award To Nigeria Workers,” and “Pay University Workers Eight Months Salary Arrears.” “Tinubu, Let Nigerians Breathe,” and “Nigerians Are Suffocating.”
Nobody from the government had spoken to them as of publication time. It was learned that the state’s governor, Hope Uzodimma, had left the State.
In a similar vein, organised labour in Ebonyi State yesterday joined the demonstration against the policy of subsidy elimination, which has raised the cost of transit and the nation’s overall standard of life.
