Oxlade Opens Up About Leaving University Due to Cultism Pressure
His calm undergraduate life, however, was upended when some boys tried to force him to join a gang.
Ikuforiji Olaitan, better known as Oxlade, a Nigerian singer, has disclosed that he dropped out of Lagos State University (LASU) in his last year owing to cultist pressure.
Oxlade shared his horrific experiences as an undergraduate at LASU during an interview on the Tea with Tay Podcast. He revealed that he was constantly in the chapel, studying and reading his Bible. His calm undergraduate life, however, was upended when some boys tried to force him to join a gang.
Oxlade’s grandma was a major influence on his decision to leave university. One day, she called him and urged him to come home. Cultists attempting to recruit him attacked his roommates in his absence shortly after he left for Ibadan.
During those challenging years, the singer expressed tremendous thanks for his grandmother’s insight and God’s intervention1. He believes that these experiences influenced him and helped to his development as a person and an artist.
Oxlade’s experience is a striking reminder of the difficulties that many university students face as a result of cultism. His bravery in sharing his experiences is admirable, and he hopes that it will spark improvements in the educational system.
